The main function of the kidneys is to rid the body of bulkage, regulate water excretion and produce critical hormones. Chronic kidney damage, e.g. as a consequence of diabetes, results in a loss of function of the kidneys. The accumulation of toxic substances in the blood leads to a malfunction of almost all the body’s organs and tissues. If not treated, such functional disorders may result in death.

Today chronic kidney failure in approx. 45,000 patients in Germany the function of the kidneys can to a large extent, but not completely, replaced by various procedures (hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, kidney transplantation).

In spite of kidney replacement in dialysis patients there is an imbalance of metabolic activity of the kidneys and deficits become evident in the body’s own critical active agents and basic substances. Pediatrics, child and adolescent psychiatry

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

The latest findings show that about 5 per cent of all schoolchildren aged between 6 and 15 years suffer from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Boys are more frequently affected than girls. However, in Germany it is quite likely that not nearly all hyperactive children have been identified. These hyperactive children have problems concentrating. Unable to suppress the urge to do or say something, they interrupt classes by constant talking, distracted behaviour and their incapacity to sit quietly. They are often aggressive and as a result they are avoided by their schoolmates and other children. Scientists believe that hyperactive children suffer from a malfunction in the cerebral metabolism, particularly in the metabolism of the messenger substance dopamine. This is where treatment with methylphenidate plays a role.

Methylphenidate is a psychostimulant from the amphetamine group. It releases various messenger substances in the brain, thereby achieving an attenuating, modulating effect in hyperactive children. (In adults, on the other hand, performance is increased and compulsive narcoleptic attacks disappear.*)

Methylphenidate is thus prescribed as part of an overall therapeutic concept to combat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children (and also against compulsive bouts of sleepiness (narcolepsy) in adults*). It may only be taken under strict medical supervision.

Although methylphenidate cannot cure hyperactivity, it can alleviate it for periods of a few hours. The effect sets in after approx. 30-40 minutes and continues for about three to four hours.

In this phase children can participate normally in lessons. They are able to concentrate and learn. Even their writing improves and they perform better in intelligence tests.
